Bringing people together to overcome violence in schools.
In order for young people to feel that they belong and to be able to live among differences, it is necessary to transform a culture of hate into a culture of peace, and prejudice into respect. It is at school that this transformation can happen. Unlike bullying, the current violence in and against schools being registered in Brazil has ideological motivations. Let’s prepare teachers for this new challenge and thus have a chance to reduce planned violence against schools and their communities.
Why is this topic so urgent?
Between 2002 and 2023, 36 attacks against schools were recorded. Of these, 21 occurred between February 2022 and October 2023 (58.33%).
Neo-Nazi cells grew in Brazil. The cities with highest number are: São Paulo (SP), with 96; Blumenau (SC), with 63; and Curitiba (PR), with 50.
Immersion in extremist culture was the motivation that caused the highest number of deaths in premeditated attacks.
VIOLENCE AGAINST SCHOOLS
IN BRAZIL
Perspectives on extremism among youth and prevention strategies
This ebook is the result of a collective effort by individuals and organizations sensitive to the harsh reality that has become part of daily life in Brazil today: political-ideological extremism and the ensuing violence. This work aims to unveil components of this new phenomenon, providing elements for diagnosis and ways to confront this issue. It serves as a gateway for those interested in the subject, especially educators and the entire school community.
Educational glossary for identifying and preventing hate speech and extremism at school
Given the current situation in Brazil, the aim of the glossary is to provide a straightforward and educational collection of vocabulary terms directly linked to, or aiding in the understanding of, the various factors contributing to violent extremism in schools. This resource enables a foundational understanding of extremism and hate speech affecting youth and educational institutions, facilitating the initiation of preventive and early detection measures against potential cases of violent extremism.

Support material for the Educational Glossary for identifying and preventing hate speech and extremism at school
This material compiles five activity itineraries designed around thematic areas that cover the terms of the Educational Glossary, aiming to identify and prevent hate speech and extremism in schools. The itineraries are guided by the methodology of Peacebuilding Circles, a method inspired by circular processes of indigenous peoples and systematized by Kay Pranis, extensively employed in restorative practices, conflict mediation, and education.
