Life with gender equality
is a human right.
For a world where no woman or girl is left behind.
SDG 05. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
Gender equality is also one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) we work toward at Instituto Aurora.
For every human being to fully enjoy the rights and freedoms set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 2 explicitly affirms that no distinction of any kind should exist, including those based on gender.
Equality to live
Equality to grow
Equality to thrive
In 2020, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) ruled unconstitutional several municipal laws that prohibited the teaching of gender and sexuality in public schools. Making gender equality invisible leads to serious consequences, such as violence against girls and women and the spread of misinformation about sexuality, reinforcing stigma and taboos.
We must create strategies to address gender equality openly and responsibly. Instituto Aurora works to bring visibility to this issue, contributing to the prevention of violence and to the promotion of empowerment among girls and women.
Our perspective onSDG 05

Target 5.2 of SDG 05, as adapted to the Brazilian context, emphasizes the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls, taking intersectionality into account. This means recognizing that, in addition to gender, factors such as race, social class, sexual orientation, and physical condition must also be considered when analyzing and addressing violence.
Our projects align with this target through initiatives such as: training public officials on gender equality and intersectionality; raising awareness of the multiple ways of being a girl or a woman and how these differences can expose some individuals more than others to violence. These efforts help ensure that public officials are better prepared to engage with and support diverse female populations. We also carry out actions aimed directly at women and girls, supporting them in recognizing violence and empowering them to respond and act.
Women and girls make up roughly half of the world’s population. As a result, a significant portion of global development depends on their potential. Yet this potential is often restricted by gender inequalities present across many areas of society. Women continue to be the primary victims of violence, remain underrepresented in politics, and bear a disproportionate share of unpaid domestic and care work.
These factors cannot be viewed in isolation. Together, they create compounded barriers to achieving gender equality — and, consequently, to fulfilling the SDGs’ commitment to leave no one behind.
